The Sukay musicians specialize in Peruvian music of the Andes Mountains.
Andean music comes from the general area inhabited by the Incas prior to European contact, it includes the countries Chile, Peru, Argentina, Ecuador, Bolivia, Colombia, and Venezuela.
Sukay was started by Edmond Badoux from Switzerland and Quentin Howard from the United States in 1974. In 1975 they traveled to South America for a year where they studied Andean music in many small villages in Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia. Upon returning from the trip they began to tour the United States and set up their home base in San Francisco, CA. They were joined by two Bolivian musicians, Gonzalo Vargas and Javier Canelas, to make Sukay a powerful influence in the United States for indigenous Andean music. Since then the group has recorded many albums and gone through numerous evolutionary changes.
Aptly subtitled "High Energy Music of the Andes", "Cumbre" (which means "Summit") features traditional Andean instruments in sparkling, original arrangements by Eddy Navia. Distinctive single and multiple pipes, charango and vocals are accompanied by traditional rhythmic and harmonic patterns on drum and guitar. Most of the numbers are fast-paced instrumentals, and "Tierra de Vicunas" and "Danza del Sicuri #2" are particularly fascinating, not only because of Navia's engaging and progressive compositional style but because of the enormous, deep-throated panpipes played by Alcides Mehia and Quentin Howard in rapid-fire repetition. The instruments, nearly as tall as the musicians themselves, are too large and require too much breath to allow for quick playing, so two musicians, each with a set of pipes in hand, alternate in sounding the notes. Singer Quentin Howard is joined by guest vocalist Yuri Ortuno on one of the two vocal numbers. This is one of my favorite Sukay's recordings--intense, varied, and interestingly structured. This is Andean music at its very best and a good introduction for first time listeners.
