Trapped Underwater...With Time Running Out.

Charlton Heston stars in this riveting drama involving a nuclear submarine and her crew trapped 1,450 feet underwater.

When the nuclear sub U.S.S. Neptune collides with a Norwegian freighter, it sinks helplessly onto a unstable ledge above a deep ocean canyon. The one hope for Captain Paul Blanchard (Heston) and his crew lies with an experimental submersible piloted by Stacy Keach and Ned Beatty. Now the race against time is on to rescue the trapped sailors as oxygen runs out and the vessel teeters closer to destruction in this gripping thriller co-starring David Carradine.

A truly wonderful underappreciated gem from the tail-end of the "disaster" films of the 1970s, that was also Charlton Heston's last film as an action lead. What really makes "Gray Lady Down" a terrific film is that unlike the disaster films of the 90s (and some of the bad ones of the 70s), there is an air of believability to the whole thing. We don't see anything extremely outlandish, and we don't see incredible death-defying feats by the leads who then improbably survive such endeavors. Instead, we get a sense of how the real Navy might respond to a crisis like this and the end result proves to be quite gripping.

The cast is great, including Heston as the downed sub's captain, Stacy Keach (minus his usual hairpiece-a rarity) as the squadron commander, and surprisingly David Carradine who after all those years of "Kung Fu" shows that he can handle a different kind of role credibly. Christopher Reeve has a bit part as an officer, and this helped bring him to the attention of the Salkinds when they were looking for candidates for "Superman." Fine score by Jerry Fielding too.

I'm not surprised a lot of people don't like this movie. It has three elements that I have never saw combined in a movie before or since. First, there is no bad guy and audiences do love a memorable bad guy. Doesn't have to be believable or plausible, just memorable. There is just a very unfortunate accident that takes down a nuclear submarine and leaves the Navy scrambling to rescue the surviving crew members. Second, the military looks GOOD-definitely not something audiences want to see nowadays. Third, it is realistic-maybe not in the technical sense of every nut and bolt being in place, but realistic in showing how people might really react in such a situation, and if there's one thing people are not interested in today, it's reality. Just look at the "reality" TV shows to see what people consider reality. Here there are no heros performing impossible stunts and surviving fatal accidents, no half-naked women popping up all over the place, no pyrotechnical music. There are just regular people-below the surface waiting for rescue, on the ship above figuring out a plan, and a few brave souls shuttling between the two. This is not a movie full of special effects and crazy theatrics, which is what far too many film makers today offer. This is just a story about how people might really help each other through a disaster. It asks a lot of the audience-the ability to appreciate how the worst circumstances can bring out the best in people. On the other hand, maybe that's something we could stand to learn to appreciate again.

This movie had some of the best line up of stars fron Heston, Carradine, Keach, and even in a small role Christopher Reeve. Ok, so the SNARC looks like something you would play with in a bath tub, but the acting as well as the effect in the sub are top notch. This may not win any awards, but for $5.99 at Best Buy, this was a greaet find.
